Dora (Hungary) is studying International Business at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. “International Business is very broad, and the degree enables me to work anywhere in the world.”

“It was my best friends’ sister who inspired me to come study at the University of Applied Sciences of NHL Stenden. She was already studying at NHL Stenden and told me all about it. Unlike Hungary, the school system here is much more practical and studying abroad would also improve my English. These things appealed to me a lot. I did look at other universities in the Netherlands, but because of the positive stories she told me, I already knew that I wanted to come to NHL Stenden.”

Challenging real-life experiences

“Gaining real-life experiences through the projects we do is what I like most about the course so far. For example, this project where we had to design a marketing campaign, which made me realise that I was doing something that I truly enjoyed. I also learned a lot about working in groups, which was sometimes challenging because of cultural and personal differences. I am someone who likes to work ahead, while others do things at the last minute. To prevent frustration, we drafted contracts at the start of the project. These contracts contains important agreements about overall collaboration. This experience taught me the importance of expressing my preferences while respecting others’ viewpoints. This contributes to the project’s successful completion.“

Bonding through distance

“Adjusting to a new environment was tough, especially making new friends.. I am a very introverted person but I knew I had to reach out to make friends. I worried about speaking English, because we don’t practice much in Hungary. But by just doing it, it worked out well and also making friends happened very naturally. Outside of school I work at a local bar, go the gym or do fun things with my friends like going to the movies or cafes. I also keep in touch with friends and family back home through video calls, which has made our bond even stronger. Before, I liked being alone, but now I see how important it is to have a good bond with my family. I value having a relationship with my family more now.”

Flying into my future career

“I love traveling, this is something I’ve done since I was young, visiting countries from Asia to Central-America. That’s one of the reasons I chose International Business; it opens doors to work anywhere in the world. I hope to work at an airport company in the future which of course has an international character. It would be nice to do an internship there in the future, it’s a great way to gain valuable working experiences. During the International Business course the classes on writing a CV and job interviews were very helpful for finding an internship.”

“In the long run, I want to start my own company focusing on marketing. Alongside the marketing module in the International Business course, I joined a 10-week programme at the Center for Entrepreneurship (CfE). It taught me about pitching my ideas and making business connections through various workshops. This is one of the great opportunities NHL Stenden has to offer.”
