“I really like how broad Creative Business is and that we get to work with real clients”

The Netherlands and NHL Stenden in particular caught Karolina’s attention when she was choosing what and where to study. The affordability, the career opportunities in the creative industries, the practical approach and, importantly for her, the international aspect with the Grand Tour and exchange possibilities all drew her to doing Creative Business at NHL Stenden. Yet her first experience abroad was unexpected through the RUN-EU programme.

“I really like how broad Creative Business is and that we get to work with real clients. It really helps us understand the industry and gives insights into how things actually work in real life. I especially liked the marketing module when we worked with a music label from Groningen developing a marketing plan for a new artist who was planning to release her new album. The programme is so broad that it opens up many different doors for the future and means I can explore lots of different areas of my creativity.”

New path, new inspirations

“My RUN-EU journey was quite unexpected and my decision to do the programme was made really fast. I’d heard about RUN-EU during the minors week NHL Stenden organises. The minors week is a chance to find out what minors you can do and where in your third year, but RUN-EU is something different. It offers short advanced programmes that you do on top of your studies – the topic doesn’t even have to be directly related to what you’re studying. My friends and I started looking into the programmes and when one of my friends got into a programme and said how happy she was with it, I decided to apply as well. I opted for a project that covered a new area for me, something I don’t do here at uni but that I thought could be an interesting path to go down. It was a programme looking at landscape design called ‘Living Playground Portugal’ and it was truly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I got so much from it! Besides gaining knowledge related to my studies, I had an amazing trip to Portugal, met people from different countries, explore new cities and had a brief experience of what an exchange programme is like. The best thing that will always stay with me is probably the connections I made there. And it was my first solo trip. That made the trip quite different from the start. I learned new things about myself and it’s inspired me to do more solo travelling.”

Fully planned

“RUN-EU takes care of a lot of things for its students. First of all you get a grant for your trip. It’s calculated to fully cover your accommodation, traveling expenses, food costs and any additional expenses. It meant that while I was actually in Portugal, I could fully enjoy my time and not worry about my own money. As a student, I enjoyed that for sure! Besides that, while I was on the RUN-EU programme, my creative business classes were online. They’d been pre-recorded which I know might be different for other programmes, but for me it made it really easy to combine as I could watch classes in my own time. Then once I’d arrived in Portugal, our coaches were always very helpful and tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We always had a lot of fresh fruit and coffee in our class, had breaks to rest and enjoy lunch, and classes would end around 4pm so we could enjoy the rest of our day traveling around or hanging out in the city.”

Making memories

“I really did make the best memories in Portugal during my RUN-EU programme. From traveling together to the beach and to Lisbon, to enjoying traditional Portuguese lunches with my team. Actually, being a student at NHL Stenden has brought me many great memories and experiences overall. There are a lot of creative and hard-working people here and a lot of students work on projects or even businesses that are unrelated to their university work. As a student, you keep being inspired to do more, try new things, and take part in interesting projects. And programmes like the ones offered by RUN-EU can give you so much. And, you know? There’s nothing to lose by doing them!”
